»… Der Computer ist ein Werkzeug – keine Magie – und er hat seine eigenen tragikomischen Grenzen, bietet aber auch neue Ausdrucks- und Kommunikationsmöglichkeiten. Mich fasziniert die Idee, mit diesem Gerät eine Art fortschrittliche Kunst zu schaffen… Gleichzeitig fühle ich mich zum »Cyber-Kitsch« in all seinen Formen hingezogen: seien es alte Programme wie MS-Paintbrush, Amateur-Bilder, die es im Internet gibt oder die unbeabsichtigte Poesie technischer Pannen. Meine Arbeit bewohnt auch stolz das Universum des »Lo-Fi« oder das »Abject«-Ende des digitalen Spektrums.« Tom Moody
Der amerikanische Medienkünstler, Musiker, Blogger und Kunstkritiker Tom Moody (1955–2022) war eine einflussreiche Schlüsselfigur auf dem Gebiet der Netzkunst. Sein Enthusiasmus und sein Engagement für diese Kunstform führten dazu, dass er mehr als zwanzig Jahre lang über ihre demokratischen Möglichkeiten bloggte und ein wichtiges Archiv der frühen Kunst im Internet schuf. Moody veröffentlichte auch eigene Kunstwerke, Musik und Texte online – von 2001 bis 2007 im Blog-Kollektiv Digital Media Tree und dann bis 2022 auf seiner Webseite und seinem Blog, auf denen er außerdem über theoretische und Netzkunst-Themen wie NFTs und Glitch Art schrieb bzw. diese kommentierte. Durch seine Beiträge in verschiedenen Internet-Surfclubs, darunter Nasty Nets, Computers Club und dump.fm, wurde Moody Teil eines Netzwerks mit Netzkünstler:innen wie Olia Lialina, Petra Cortright und Ryder Ripps.
Moodys Arbeiten haben eine Lo-Fi Ästhetik, die auf die von ihm verwendeten Werkzeuge zurückzuführen ist: alte Software, die manchmal als »Abandonware« bezeichnet wird, wie z. B. Microsoft Paintbrush. Zusammen mit Künstler:innen wie Lorna Mills und JODI gehörte er zu den ersten, die animierte GIFs als künstlerisches Medium verwendeten.
Die Ausstellung zeigt eine Auswahl von Moodys GIFS und elektronischer Musik aus den letzten zwei Jahrzehnten, darunter auch neuere Werke, die er vor seinem frühen Tod an den Folgen von Covid im Jahr 2022 geschaffen hat.

»… The computer is a tool, not magic, and possesses its own tragicomic limitations as well as offering new means of expression and communication. I am intrigued by the idea of making some kind of advanced art with this apparatus… At the same time, I am drawn to »cyber-kitsch« in all its forms, whether in old programs such as MS-Paintbrush, the amateur imagery that abounds on the Web, or the unintended poetry of technical glitches. American media artist, musician, blogger, and art critic Tom Moody (1955–2022) was an influential and key figure in the field of net art. His enthusiasm and dedication to the art form led him to blog about its democratic possibilities for more than twenty years, producing an important archive of early art on the Internet. Moody also published his own artwork, music, and writing online—from 2001–2007 on the blog collective Digital Media Tree and then until 2022 on his own webpage and blog, where he also wrote about and commented on theoretical and net art topics such as NFTs and glitch art. Through his posts in various Internet surf clubs, including Nasty Nets, Computers Club, and dump.fm, Moody joined a network of other net artists that included Olia Lialina, Petra Cortright, and Ryder Ripps.
Moody’s work has a lo-fi aesthetic due to the tools he used: old software, sometimes referred to as »abandonware«, such as Microsoft Paintbrush. Alongside artists such as Lorna Mills and JODI, he was among the first to use animated GIFs as an artistic medium.
This exhibition features a selection of Moody’s GIFS and electronic music from the last two decades, including recent works created before his untimely passing from Covid complications in 2022.
